It’s really hard to find that really good, simple neighborhood sushi joint in NYC. I mean that place that’s a step up from your take-out sushi spot but not a “book the chef’s counter a month in advance for a $$$$ omakase” (there are a lot of those in the city though). New York has some of the most outstanding sushi I’ve ever had, but it’s obviously impossible (for me) to become a regular at Sushi Zo or Yasuda. For a no-frills and affordable, yet fresh and delicious sushi, Momoya is #1 on my list, and if you live in Chelsea or the Upper West Side, it’s probably on yours too!
The two Momoya locations have been NYC sushi staples for over a decade. And one of the many reasons for that is their consistency. Momoya’s menu almost never changes, but is unfailingly so deliciously satisfying. For many New Yorkers, myself included, Momoya has become the go-to destination for a casual, sit-down sushi craving. The minimalist spaces always fill up, and unless you get there as soon as they open, be prepared for a bit of a wait. Momoya doesn’t take reservations, so show up early, put your name down, and enjoy a drink there or at the wine bar across the street while you’re waiting.
Order their cheap specials and bento boxes for lunch, or their modern Japanese à-la-carte dishes or tasting for dinner, but whatever you do, every order should include the following: the Crispy Rice roll (not for sushi purists but omg), the Tuna Tortilla and the Miso Black Cod app (not the entrée one). All dishes are made for sharing so order a mix of apps and rolls/sashimi. Leave room for the Green Tea Mille Feuille cake from Lady M (or the Mochi).
The staff is friendly, but service is not their forte, although food comes out pretty quickly. The vibe is really chill which makes Momoya great for a friends get together or a casual date.
Momoya has a serious sushi cult from NYC sushi lovers. The fish is consistently fresh and their signature Japanese-fusion dishes always hit the spot.
