If you’re planning a business meal in Midtown East, craving Greek cuisine or seafood, but can’t quite expense a meal at Milos, Avra Estiatorio is your next best option.
Avra is another old school Greek restaurant in mid-Manhattan that is praised for its fresh fish and seafood. Just like Milos, Avra is best appreciated for a corporate lunch or a pre-theatre dinner.

The restaurant lays in a huge open space with a classic Midtown ambiance. The atmosphere is upscale, but not stiff, with an older, corporate crowd. The decor is simple and nothing out of the ordinary, with exposed wood beams and fresh whole fish displayed on ice by the open kitchen, and Greek music in the background. The best reason to come to Avra, though, is for their outdoor seating in their flowered courtyard.

Just like Milos, Avra is a Greek restaurant with an emphasis on traditional Mediterranean seafood recipes. After you’ve enjoyed their complimentary olives, radishes, warm bread and hummus, the best way to order is to share a bunch of seafood appetizers (octopus, shrimp…) and at least one whole fish for the table (priced by the pound). The menu offers Greek classics (spanakopita and the lamb chops are the way to go for non-fish eaters), but also New York classics (tuna tartare and truffle fries are not authentic Greek!) Avra has a great selection of Greek wines, so make sure you pair your meal with their recommended bottles and end it with their fig ice cream!
Champagne brunch deal on weekends for $21.95
The major con at Avra is their disorganized service, especially for an “upscale” restaurant with such a corporate crowd.
Reservations are conveniently easy to come by for lunch, brunch and dinner.
Although Milos remains best for a high-end Greek meal in Midtown Manhattan, Avra is the preferred way to go for a more affordable option and on warm days for their outdoor seating.
